
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in January 2025, unemployment rates were higher in one state and stable in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The national rate decreased to 4.0%, though it was 0.3 percentage points higher than January 2024. Nonfarm payrolls fell in four states but remained unchanged in 46 states and the District, with employment rising in 17 states over the past year. They write:
Unemployment rates were higher in January in 1 state and stable in 49 states and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Thirty-two states had jobless rate increases from a year earlier, 2 states had decreases, and 16 states and the District had little change. The national unemployment rate edged down over the month to 4.0 percent but was 0.3 percentage point higher than in January 2024.
Nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 4 states and was essentially unchanged in 46 states and the District of Columbia in January 2025. Over the year, nonfarm payroll
employment increased in 17 states and was essentially unchanged in 33 states and the District.
